Raksha Bandhan: The Festival of Purity

Festivals are the best time of the year when we can celebrate the happy and cherishing moment with our loved ones. Festivals are the few moments of the year when a community celebrates its culture and tradition in form of festive rituals. Coming to the Hindu religion then it is a religion that rejoices the maximum number of festivals in the world. Hindus have festival for every relation. There is festival of Karwa Chauth for husband and wife, there is a festival of wealth, festival of colors, festival of dedication, etc. and beating these all there is a festival of purity which is called as Raksha Bandhan.

If you are astonished why we have kept Raksha Bandhan in the category of festival of purity then you must know well the reason for celebrating the festival well. Raksha Bandhan is the festival that commemorates the strongest bond on the earth. The love bond between brother and sister cannot be compared with any other bond in this earth. Whenever sister is in need, it is her brother who approaches her first. To let the sister fight with all the odds of her life the support of brother is always required. And the festival of Raksha Bandhan is a cute remembrance to brother regarding his responsibilities and duties towards sister. The full moon day or Shravana Purnima is celebrated as Raksha Bandhan. Though the festival originated from Hindu religion but in context with present time it is not limited to a particular religion only.

Raksha Bandhan celebration is not limited a religious festival only, but the moral of the day makes it a widely accepted festival. The boundation of religion really doesn’t matters when hearts are all set to respect the festival and the pure rakhi thread. For celebrating the festival one is not supposed to share blood relation. If there is a feeling of brother and sister in between two strangers then the thread of rakhi completes rest of the formalities. Mere tying rakhi thread to a stranger obliged him to protect the woman from the difficult phases of her life.

There are many stories in history that significantly describes the importance of rakhi thread. People other than Hindus have deep faith in rakhi festival and celebrate it with full gusto. In context with present time as well there are many stories describing the significance of Raksha Bandhan for people of different religion across the country.  Not only this, but Indians settled abroad also celebrate the festival with same gusto and feeling. Sisters send rakhi to India so that the dignity of this festival can be maintained even if there is a distance gap between the two.
